Great post Mary! This was really interesting -- I think I will try out what she's suggested for you. I am notorious for spending $$ at lunch including buying all sorts of 'goodies'.

Wow Mary! I'm very impressed you were able to book Patricia Lovett-Reid for lunch. I own one of her books, Get Real: 26 Canadian Women Share the Secret to Authentic Success and it's a good read. Can't wait to find out who else you have lined up for your next lunch!

Thanks Mike! I will check out that tool. 9% on dining, eh? I can't wait to see (note the sarcasm) what nuggets this experiment will reveal.

Something I've found helpful is using a tool like Quicken Online: http://quicken.intuit.com/personal-finance-software/free-online-money-management.jsp

It hooks up with your online banking, and automatically tracks your spending, breaks it up in nice graphs.

Eg. Over the last 6 months, I've spent 31% of my income on rent and 9% on dining.

My parents always tracked every single thing they spent money on, but I could never do this.. Quicken takes about the right amount of energy for me.

Oh yeah, and you need to buy things with debit or credit, otherwise you just have a huge cash section.
